Role overview

Own the evolution of a payroll solution for K-12 school districts at the intersection of Product, Customer Success, and Engineering.

This product role determines what gets built and why, balancing customer needs with long-term strategy and changing regulations.

Product strategy and definition

  • Understand customer payroll processes, participate in JAD sessions, analyze pain points, and identify product enhancements.
  • Monitor payroll regulations, tax requirements, and retirement reporting; translate changes into product requirements.
  • Prioritize roadmap initiatives with Product Leadership and balance customer-specific requests against long-term strategy.
  • Create Jira stories and epics, write functional requirements and acceptance criteria, and define workflows and business rules.
  • Collaborate with UX and Engineering, review BRDs and workflows, and ensure solutions integrate with ERP modules and scale.

Collaboration and delivery

  • Partner with Customer Success during implementations and conversions, advising on payroll capabilities and best practices.
  • Clarify functional requirements, support workflow and solution-design discussions, and participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and feature reviews.
  • Own payroll features from concept through release and validate completed functionality, including payroll calculations and regulatory compliance.
  • Perform functional testing alongside Engineering and QA, including parallel payroll scenarios.
  • Communicate readiness, timelines, and release updates, with attention to year-end and regulatory deadlines.
  • Use customer feedback, support trends, and adoption to recommend usability, workflow, and automation improvements.

Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of Product Management or Product Owner experience in enterprise software; SaaS experience is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on payroll experience as a practitioner or working on payroll software.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. payroll, including tax withholding, garnishments, deductions, benefits, and year-end processing (W-2, 941).
  • Experience gathering business requirements, writing user stories, epics, and acceptance criteria, and working with Engineering through the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methods, analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills.
