Role overview

Own the evolution of a payroll solution for K-12 school districts, working across Product, Customer Success, and Engineering.

The role owns product decisions and delivery rather than implementation or project management alone.

Apply payroll domain expertise to changing customer and regulatory needs and support Customer Success in using existing product capabilities.

Product strategy and discovery

  • Understand customer payroll processes, including pay cycles, supplemental pay, deductions, benefits, leave accruals, and year-end processing.
  • Participate in Joint Application Design sessions when payroll expertise is needed; analyze pain points and identify product opportunities.
  • Recommend existing platform capabilities where suitable, define feature enhancements, and translate regulatory changes into product requirements.
  • Balance customer-specific requests with long-term strategy and help Product Leadership prioritize the roadmap.

Product definition and delivery

  • Create and manage Jira stories and epics, and write functional requirements and acceptance criteria for calculations, business rules, and edge cases.
  • Define workflows, user experiences, and business rules across payroll and related HR and finance modules.
  • Collaborate with UX and Engineering, review business requirement documents and workflows, and ensure solutions fit platform architecture and ERP integrations.
  • Own payroll features from concept through release; validate accuracy, compliance, and requirements, and perform functional testing with Engineering and QA.
  • Participate in sprint planning, backlog refinement, and feature reviews; communicate readiness, timelines, and release updates.

Customer partnership and improvement

  • Partner with Customer Success on client implementations and payroll conversions; advise on capabilities, best practices, and implementation approaches.
  • Act as a payroll subject matter expert in strategic customer discussions, turn feedback into product improvements, and support complex implementations.
  • Monitor feedback, support trends, and adoption; recommend usability, workflow, and automation improvements that increase scalability and reduce effort.
  • Contribute to the long-term product vision and roadmap.

Qualifications

  • At least 4 years of Product Management or Product Owner experience within enterprise software; SaaS experience is preferred.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on payroll experience as a practitioner or working on payroll software.
  • Strong working knowledge of U.S. payroll, including federal and state withholding, garnishments, deductions, benefits, and year-end processing (W-2, 941).
  • Experience gathering business requirements, writing user stories, epics, and acceptance criteria, and working with Engineering through the software development lifecycle.
  • Strong understanding of Agile methods, analytical and problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and written and verbal communication skills.
  • The source description ends mid-sentence after mentioning the ability to manage multiple initiatives.
