Role overview

The role is Lead Engineering Manager in Control System for inverter-based power plant control.

The specialist scope includes utility-scale solar, wind, BESS, hybrid plants, large microgrids serving hydrogen processes, and plants connected to extra-high-voltage grids.

The posting calls for 15 years of control-system experience and five further years at technical leadership level.

Engineering and control architecture

  • Develop control architectures for normal, contingency, and emergency operation of inverter-based power plants.
  • Account for grid-code requirements and the functional characteristics of inverters, STATCOMs, wind turbines, BESS, and other power elements.
  • Develop functional specifications for plant controllers, including PV and complex hybrid controllers.
  • Apply AGC to project-specific power-system control requirements and develop or review compliant control architectures.
  • Evaluate communication protocols including Modbus TCP/IP, IEC 104, and IEC 61850 GOOSE.
  • Design and tune controller parameters, including gains, time constants, anti-windup, and filters.
  • Develop controller models and review static, dynamic, and transient studies and grid-impact reports.
  • Set up RTDS hardware-in-the-loop tests to validate control parameters and overall system performance.

Measurements, compliance, and commissioning

  • Apply GPS/GNSS time synchronization and interface advanced numerical meters and measuring devices.
  • Address Class-A power-quality measurements in line with IEC 61000-4-30 and PMU/synchrophasor measurements in line with IEEE C37.118; integrate measurements with PDC/SCADA.
  • Interpret grid-code requirements, apply relevant IEC/IEEE standards and cybersecurity requirements, and assess risks and mitigations before field commissioning.
  • Commission and tune control systems in the field; troubleshoot controller performance, reproduce issues in RTDS, and conduct root-cause analysis.

Candidate requirements

  • Overall control-system experience of 15 years and five additional years at technical leadership level.
  • Specialist experience in control systems for large utility-scale inverter-based power plants, including solar, wind, BESS, hybrid plants, and large islanded microgrids.
  • B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical & Electronics; M.Tech in Control Systems; and Ph.D. in Control Systems are listed as minimum qualifications.
  • Hands-on control architecture, controller specification, AGC, and grid-code compliance experience.
  • Experience with power-system studies and controller models using PSS/E, DIgSILENT, or PSCAD.
  • Hands-on RTDS hardware-in-the-loop setup and testing experience.
  • Experience in commissioning, field tuning, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Knowledge of relevant IEC/IEEE standards, measurements, synchronization protocols, and cybersecurity standards.
