Backend Engineering Team and Opportunity

The team builds high-scale, fault-tolerant distributed systems serving millions of users daily across inventory, pricing, booking, payments, and customer and partner platforms.

The Staff Backend Engineer owns a critical service or domain from architecture through production, makes independent technical decisions, and raises the technical bar for the team.

The platform uses technologies including Scala, Go, Java, Kotlin, Kafka, and Aerospike, with CI/CD, automation, and observability practices.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and own scalable distributed systems and microservices; lead complex features and initiatives end to end.
  • Drive system and API design, engineering practices, performance, scalability, reliability, and fault tolerance.
  • Identify and resolve risks and improvement opportunities; make technical trade-offs and own outcomes.
  • Collaborate with adjacent teams and business stakeholders to align technical priorities with business needs.
  • Remain hands-on in coding and system design; mentor engineers and raise team standards.
  • Handle production issues, lead root-cause analysis, and drive follow-up improvements.

Required Qualifications

  • 8–12 years of backend engineering experience and strong experience building and owning distributed systems at scale.
  • Expertise in at least one of Java, Kotlin, Scala, or Go.
  • Strong understanding of microservices, REST APIs, system design, SQL/NoSQL databases, performance, scalability, and concurrency.
  • Strong coding and problem-solving ability.
  • Evidence of ownership, sound decision-making under ambiguity, stakeholder communication, and measurable mentoring impact.

Preferred Experience

  • Large-scale consumer or marketplace platforms are a plus.
  • Exposure to Kafka or RabbitMQ, or experience with Cassandra, MongoDB, or Aerospike, is nice to have.
  • Familiarity with AWS/GCP, CI/CD pipelines, or Agile/Scrum environments is nice to have.
