About the Team and Role
WEX Mobility Engineering delivers fleet management and mobility payments solutions to large customers and partners across North America.
Mobility systems provide SaaS and API solutions supporting fleet credit issuance, fuel discounts, spend controls, merchant restrictions, and transaction controls.
The Staff Software Engineer provides deep technical leadership across multiple teams and services while remaining hands-on in foundational technical areas.
Technical Leadership and Architecture
- Define and evolve architecture across multiple Mobility services and resolve cross-team bottlenecks.
- Lead architecture reviews and technical workshops with engineering, product, security, compliance, operations, and partner teams.
- Establish reusable patterns, reference architectures, libraries, and frameworks for APIs, service communication, events, data access, observability, and cloud infrastructure.
- Set standards for REST APIs, gRPC APIs, ODATA, SQL, service contracts, versioning, compatibility, and integration patterns.
- Design secure, scalable, highly available, and resilient internet-scale systems.
Security, Reliability, and Delivery
- Drive security-by-design and compliance-by-design practices, including threat modeling, API security, authorization, PCI DSS considerations, data protection, and auditability.
- Define SLI, SLO, operational readiness, and observability standards and drive chaos testing and resilience improvements.
- Create reusable CI/CD and infrastructure-as-code patterns using Helm, Argo workflows, Terraform, and secure cloud resource templates.
- Promote unit, integration, contract, end-to-end, concurrency, and performance testing.
- Debug complex service-boundary issues, lead major incident resolution, and drive corrective actions and lasting reliability improvements.
Collaboration, Mentoring, and AI
- Build self-service tools, dashboards, and automation that help engineers, support teams, and operational partners diagnose and resolve issues.
- Shape cross-team roadmaps by identifying dependencies, critical-path risks, architectural constraints, and technical debt.
- Translate architecture risks and technology investments into customer, revenue, efficiency, and risk outcomes.
- Mentor senior engineers and promote thoughtful technical decision-making and inclusive collaboration.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and leverage AI-enabled development tools and responsible AI solutions where they create measurable value.
- Maintain architecture decision records, design documents, reference implementations, runbooks, corrective-action documents, and readiness plans.
Experience and Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field.
- 7–12 years of professional software engineering experience with technical leadership across multiple teams or systems.
- Deep understanding of data structures, algorithms, object-oriented design, distributed systems, and complex problem solving.
- Experience designing internet-scale services with strong scalability, availability, security, reliability, and operability.
- Expertise in Java or C#, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, ODATA, gRPC, and SQL-based systems.
- Experience with event-driven architecture, Kafka, cloud-native architecture, Docker, Kubernetes, and infrastructure as code.
- Experience with observability, SLI/SLO, incident management, resilience testing, production readiness, secure API design, threat modeling, and regulated payment environments.
- Experience with AI-enabled development tools and production-grade AI agents, copilots, multi-agent systems, or distributed AI architectures.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field is preferred.
- Experience in card payments, fleet management, mobility, fintech, mobile development, platform modernization, reliability initiatives, or internal developer platforms is preferred.
- Experience building AI skills and deploying AI solutions to production is preferred.
- Familiarity with Pinecone, Weaviate, OpenSearch, Milvus, AI evaluation, safety, governance, and responsible AI principles is preferred.
