Role overview

The role is described as a QA Automation Tester supporting the quality, reliability and performance of government digital services.

Testing is expected to align with GOV.UK Service Standard and DDaT requirements.

Automation and testing duties

  • Design, develop and maintain UI and API automation frameworks, including frameworks built from the ground up.
  • Develop automated test scripts and API test suites using Java, JavaScript, Playwright, Selenium, Cypress, Postman, REST Assured or equivalent tools.
  • Integrate automated test suites into CI/CD pipelines using tools such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions and GitLab CI.
  • Plan and execute automation-focused tests, covering functional, regression and integration testing; support UAT and end-to-end journey validation.
  • Identify and track defects, work with developers to resolve them, and produce test reports and automation execution summaries.
  • Monitor failures and improve test coverage, efficiency and automation reliability.
  • Participate in Agile ceremonies, collaborate across delivery teams, refine test strategies and guide junior testers where required.
  • Align testing with relevant GOV.UK Service Standard and DDaT requirements; support security, accessibility and performance validation where appropriate.

Technical skills and experience

  • At least 6 years of experience as a QA Automation Tester or in a similar role.
  • Strong proficiency in Java and JavaScript; hands-on UI automation experience with Playwright, Selenium and Cypress.
  • Strong API testing experience with REST Assured and Postman; experience building automation frameworks from scratch.
  • Understanding of microservices architecture and contract testing, including API testing.
  • Experience integrating tests into CI/CD with Jenkins, GitHub Actions or GitLab CI; proficiency in Git and version control.
  • Familiarity with React, HTML and CSS; good SQL knowledge and experience testing relational databases.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving and troubleshooting skills; effective communication and collaboration in Agile teams.
