Design infrastructure underneath distributed systems for clients operating in regulated, air-gapped, and physically demanding environments.

What you'll work on
- Map cloud components to open-source, on-premises equivalents such as Kafka or Redpanda, EMQX, ClickHouse or Druid, and Ceph or MinIO; document trade-offs.
- Design multi-node clustering, rack-aware replication, and quorum topologies for bare-metal Kafka or Redpanda and Postgres Patroni clusters.
- Tune Linux kernel parameters, NUMA bindings, NVMe I/O scheduling, CPU affinity, and IRQ balancing to reduce hardware bottlenecks.
- Write implementation-ready blueprints and runbooks for DevOps execution with Terraform and Ansible.
- Review client hardware specifications before deployment and provide a go-or-no-go recommendation.
- Build reusable reference architectures for future air-gapped deployments.
Required experience
- Bring 10+ years architecting and operating production distributed infrastructure at TB-to-PB scale.
- Have expert-level production Kafka or Redpanda clustering experience, including partitioning, ISR tuning, consumer groups, compaction, and full operational lifecycle.
- Bring deep Linux systems engineering experience, including kernel networking, storage fabrics, and NUMA-aware process binding.
- Have a production track record running high-availability database clusters without a cloud load balancer, using Patroni, Pacemaker, or an equivalent.
- Have deployed Ceph or MinIO on physical hardware, including CRUSH maps, erasure coding, and performance tuning.
- Write blueprints and runbooks another team can execute without interpretation.
- This hands-on role is not intended for candidates whose distributed systems experience is entirely on managed cloud services.
Role approach
The architecture is executed directly by the DevOps team, so the quality of the designs affects system resilience during hardware failures.
The role emphasizes building and tuning infrastructure rather than overseeing it through a large team or additional management layers.
