Team Leader - Earthmoving Equipment

Job purpose

Service operations

• Plan workshop, preventive maintenance, and field service activities around customer priorities, technician availability, and operational requirements.
• Allocate work according to technical complexity, technician skill, and workload.
• Review customer complaints, inspection findings, and diagnostic reports to confirm repair methods.
• Guide the team on complex mechanical, hydraulic, electrical, and electronic faults.
• Monitor productivity, repair quality, work in progress, deadlines, first-time fixes, and repeat repairs.
• Coordinate breakdown and machine-down response, including technicians, mobile units, tools, parts, and customer-site access.
• Review estimates, parts requirements, and additional work recommendations before seeking customer approval.

Documentation and customer coordination

• Ensure job cards, service reports, diagnostic findings, labour hours, parts usage, photographs, and warranty documents are accurate and complete.
• Coordinate parts availability with the Parts Department and support warranty claims, product campaigns, factory modifications, and technical cases.
• Keep customers informed about repair progress, additional work, expected completion dates, and operational delays.
• Supervise pre-delivery inspection, commissioning, attachment installation, factory updates, and customer handover.

Safety, team, and performance

• Monitor workshop tools, diagnostic and lifting equipment, and mobile service vehicles for condition, availability, and proper use.
• Conduct toolbox talks, risk assessments, and safety briefings, including PPE, lockout/tagout, lifting, hydraulic pressure, and field service safety.
• Identify technician development needs and support coaching, performance development, and a multi-skilled service team.
• Monitor productivity, efficiency, turnaround time, first-time fix rates, repeat repairs, breakdown response, ageing work in progress, and safety compliance.
• Report workload, escalations, machine-down cases, manpower concerns, and corrective actions to the Aftersales Manager.
• Support overtime, emergency call-outs, and extended field service when operationally required.

Qualifications and experience

• Diploma, ITI, or trade certificate in diesel mechanics, mechanical engineering, automotive engineering, or heavy equipment maintenance.
• A bachelor's degree in mechanical or automotive engineering is an added advantage.
• 8 to 10 years of hands-on experience in earthmoving, construction, mining, or heavy equipment service operations.
• 3 to 4 years of experience in a supervisory, workshop foreman, or technical team leader role.
• Experience with workshop operations and customer-site service for excavators, wheel loaders, dozers, crawler loaders, or related equipment.
• Experience with Liebherr or comparable equipment brands is preferred.

Technical competencies

• Knowledge of diesel engines, hydraulic systems, powertrains, undercarriage systems, electrical controls, and electronic diagnostics.
• Ability to interpret diagnostic reports, wiring diagrams, hydraulic schematics, technical drawings, and OEM service documentation.
• Capability in workshop planning, work allocation, resource coordination, technician leadership, coaching, and development.
