Role overview

The Stress Engineer will work with Assystem’s Simulation and Assessment team on nuclear engineering projects.

Projects include finite element analysis assessments of nuclear components against design codes such as ASME III or RCC-M.

Work may be undertaken within client teams as an embedded team member or through Assystem office-based project delivery.

Key work

  • Plan, deliver and report engineering assessment projects.
  • Perform finite element analysis assessments of nuclear components against applicable design codes.
  • Communicate with internal and external stakeholders, including customer technical leads.
  • Undertake work packages for major UK and international nuclear clients.
  • Travel to Assystem offices and customer sites within the UK as required.

Essential requirements

  • Engineering degree or equivalent.
  • Hands-on experience using computer-based modelling codes such as Abaqus, ANSYS, Nastran or CFD.
  • Appreciation of code assessments in a safety-related industry, such as ASME, RCC-M, KTA or comparable codes from other sectors.
  • Strong technical fundamentals in calculations, structures, mechanics and fluids, and ability to sense-check analysis results.
  • Full UK driving licence and ability to travel within the UK.
  • BPSS and SC clearance are required; applicants not already cleared to minimum SC level must meet residency criteria to attain the required clearance.

Desirable experience

  • Previous experience in similar roles in the nuclear or fusion industry is desirable.
  • Hands-on 3D CAD modelling experience using tools such as Autodesk Inventor, CATIA or SolidWorks is desirable.
  • Fluid modelling such as CFD, or dynamic modelling such as LS-Dyna or Radioss, is desirable.
  • Working toward Chartered Engineer status is desirable.

Professional attributes

  • The role calls for communication, leadership, integrity, planning and coordination skills.
  • The engineer should deliver quality outputs to time and budget, work independently and use initiative.
  • The role involves collaboration in multi-party and multinational environments and awareness of technical issues beyond the engineer’s own discipline.
  • Engineering and collaboration tools mentioned include ANSYS, Abaqus FEA, MathCAD, PLM systems, document control platforms, MS Office and Teams.

Work arrangement

  • The listing labels the position on site and also states that hybrid work includes one to two remote days per week.
  • Work may involve client teams, Assystem offices and customer sites.

About Assystem

  • Assystem describes itself as an international nuclear engineering firm supporting complex infrastructure projects in highly regulated sectors.
  • The company cites ongoing training, career opportunities, social benefits and internal promotion opportunities.
