Senior Project Engineer – Substation

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Manage project lifecycle from engineering and procurement through construction, testing, commissioning, and handover.
• Coordinate HV/EHV GIS/AIS substations, transformers, switchgear, protection and control, SCADA/RTU, communications, and associated civil works.
• Act as primary contact for TRANSCO/TAQA Transmission, consultants, and other stakeholders.
• Establish project execution plans, schedules, budgets, resources, and risk plans; monitor engineering, approvals, procurement, manufacturing, inspection, delivery, installation, and commissioning.
• Lead multidisciplinary teams and manage interfaces with transmission lines, existing substations, utilities, control centers, and infrastructure.
• Ensure compliance with specifications, client standards, drawings, method statements, ITPs, and applicable IEC/IEEE standards.
• Manage subcontractors and suppliers, including performance, technical coordination, commercial matters, and claims.
• Hold progress and coordination meetings; prepare progress reports, dashboards, schedules, and forecasts.
• Control costs, variations, change orders, claims, and cash flow; identify risks and develop mitigation and contingency plans.
• Implement HSE requirements, including permits to work, risk assessments, site safety procedures, and emergency arrangements.
• Coordinate testing, commissioning, energization, outage planning, handover, and closeout documentation and activities.
• Drive punch-list clearance, performance testing, taking-over certification, and defects-liability activities.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent.
• Typically 15+ years of experience in electrical transmission/substation projects, with significant project management experience.
• Demonstrated experience in HV/EHV substation EPC projects, including 132/33 kV, 220/132 kV, or 400/132 kV projects.
• TRANSCO/TAQA Transmission or equivalent utility project experience is highly desirable.
• Strong knowledge of project planning, cost control, procurement, construction, testing, commissioning, and handover.
• Familiarity with IEC/IEEE standards and utility specifications.
• Experience managing multidisciplinary teams, subcontractors, and major equipment suppliers.
• Strong knowledge of HSE and QA/QC requirements for utility projects.
• PMP or equivalent project-management certification is advantageous; UAE/GCC project experience is preferred.

Compensation

• Pay is stated as AED 30,000–40,000 per month; the structured salary field states AED 30,000 per month.
