Role overview

Costain is recruiting a Senior Engineer and experienced Section Engineers for Thames Water framework projects.

The AMP8 delivery team works on water and wastewater projects, from capital maintenance to major civil new-build schemes.

Projects are predominantly across the Thames Valley and Thames South, with work across Marlborough, Gloucestershire, and Oxfordshire.

Site and project delivery

  • Oversee execution of a project section and ensure engineering tasks meet required standards.
  • Help establish the site and deliver the project, supporting the team and management.
  • Communicate with alliance partners and subcontractors and engage with stakeholders and third parties, including landowners.
  • Maintain accurate site records, identify variances or issues, and report feedback to line managers.
  • Assist with design coordination and distribute documentation for site works.
  • Hold site responsibilities such as permits to work and undertake coordination or subcontract-management duties as assigned.
  • Coordinate site disciplines and subcontract managers to support effective delivery.
  • Support QA/QC documentation, including Inspection Test Plans and check sheets.
  • Support mandatory and regulatory inspections, including SHE, LOLER, and PUWER.
  • Develop, monitor, and report on five-to-six-week look-ahead schedules with supply-chain partners and stakeholders using APHEX.
  • Prepare or approve and implement risk assessments and method statements for directly resourced works.
  • Plan and procure materials and plant, maintain efficient use and stock levels, manage direct reports, and support their development.

Additional delivery duties

  • Ensure engineering, measurement, and subcontract works comply with contract conditions and requirements.
  • Promote continuous improvement and share good practice within the project, Costain, and the wider industry.
  • Attend or arrange weekly coordination, progress, programme, and resource meetings.
  • Monitor and drive SHE performance and ensure health and safety regulations are followed.

Essential experience and knowledge

  • Understanding of engineering principles and technical knowledge of construction techniques and best practices.
  • Some civil or MEICA construction experience and design-management experience.
  • Computer competence with MS Word, Excel, and a document-control system.
  • Water or similar industry background.
  • A degree- or HNC-level qualification in a relevant engineering subject.
  • Relevant CSCS card, health and safety and environmental management training, and current driving licence.

Desirable experience and qualifications

  • Temporary-works coordination, confined-space working, lifting operations, or scaffold-management experience is desirable.
  • Civil and commissioning-phase experience is desirable.
  • APM Introductory Certification or working toward it is desirable; vocational training with successful engineer-level experience is also desirable.
  • Ability to take charge of a section of a large site or sole responsibility for a smaller site is desirable.

Workplace

  • The role involves site-based responsibilities and work across project locations in the stated regions.
