Principal Electrical Design Engineer | Data Centres

Role overview

Key responsibilities

• Lead design and technical delivery for hyperscale, colocation, and mission-critical data centres through construction and commissioning.
• Assess electrical loads, power demand, capacity, and infrastructure sizing; calculate and review power supply and distribution.
• Validate fault current, short-circuit, protection coordination, and power system studies.
• Develop resilient HV/LV, UPS, standby generation, grounding, and power monitoring solutions.
• Coordinate integrated designs with mechanical, structural, civil, ICT, and specialist disciplines.
• Review and approve calculations, specifications, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
• Engage clients, contractors, vendors, and stakeholders; support programme, resource, budget, and technical risk management.
• Guide testing, commissioning, integrated systems testing, and operational readiness.
• Mentor junior and intermediate engineers and support standards, design methods, and innovation.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline.
• 12+ years of electrical design engineering experience in MEP consulting or an engineering consultancy.
• At least 5 years delivering data centre, mission-critical, or other highly resilient infrastructure projects.
• Experience designing Tier III and/or Tier IV data centre electrical systems, including redundancy and resilience strategies.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical calculation or modelling tools.
• Familiarity with IEC, IEEE, NFPA, ASHRAE, TIA, and Uptime Institute guidance.
• Strong technical knowledge of HV/LV distribution, UPS, standby generators, busbar systems, earthing, and lightning protection.
• Strong client-facing communication and stakeholder management skills.
• Professional memberships or certifications such as CEng, PE, ATD, CDCDP, AOS, or equivalent are highly desirable.
• Construction, testing, commissioning, and handover experience is advantageous; Middle East/GCC experience and regional utility knowledge are beneficial.
