Full Job Posting

Role overview

Lead a newly formed Agile embedded engineering team in HID's Cardiff design centre.

Develop next-generation enterprise desktop and embedded readers for IDT on a shared platform developed with HID PACS.

The role combines line management, technical direction, Scrum Master duties, stakeholder alignment, and hands-on engineering contribution.

Technical leadership

  • Design, implement, review, and debug production reader technology on ARM Cortex-M under Zephyr RTOS.
  • Resolve technical issues across software, hardware, and Secure Element boundaries, including lab debugging and hardware bring-up.
  • Conduct design and code reviews and uphold platform coding standards.

Team leadership and platform delivery

  • Recruit, onboard, manage, coach, and develop engineers, including performance reviews and career progression.
  • Plan team capacity and skills coverage and address capability gaps.
  • Deliver incremental IDT reader features on the PACS-developed core platform and coordinate with PACS engineering.
  • Champion reuse and harmonization, extending the platform where IDT-specific needs require it.

Technology and ways of working

  • The platform uses ARM Cortex-M silicon, Zephyr RTOS, and a Secure Element.
  • Reader-side work includes applied cryptography and Secure Element integration.
  • The team is expected to use shared architecture governance, coding standards, branching practices, and release cadence.

Organization

The role sits within the PACS engineering organization and reports into IDT Engineering.

HID's Identification Technologies organization develops smart components and enabling services for trusted identities and IoT applications.

Requirements

  • The role is suited to an established team lead or a strong senior embedded engineer ready to step up.
  • Experience with embedded engineering on ARM Cortex-M under Zephyr RTOS is needed for hands-on technical contribution.
  • Ability to provide technical direction and make credible engineering decisions across software, hardware, and Secure Element boundaries.
  • Ability to lead, coach, and develop engineers, including recruiting and building a new team.
  • Ability to collaborate across engineering organizations and work within shared platform architecture, standards, and release practices.
