Assistant Workshop Manager

Role overview

Workshop operations and maintenance

• Assist with day-to-day workshop management; supervise and coordinate mechanics, electricians, tyre technicians, auto denters, and other staff.
• Allocate repair jobs by priority and expertise; plan and monitor preventive and corrective maintenance and scheduled servicing.
• Monitor repair progress and quality, inspect completed work, and ensure vehicles are safe and roadworthy before release.
• Assist with mechanical and technical diagnosis and troubleshooting.
• Verify job cards, inspection reports, maintenance records, and repair reports; maintain accurate fleet records.
• Coordinate vehicle availability and maintenance schedules with Transport/Operations.
• Monitor tools, equipment, spare parts, and consumables; coordinate parts availability with stores and procurement.
• Help manage workshop expenses, repair costs, and vehicle downtime.
• Ensure compliance with company procedures, safety regulations, and PPE requirements; keep the workshop clean, organized, and safe.
• Report major mechanical problems, delays, accidents, and maintenance issues; assist with staff training, supervision, and evaluation.
• Support internal and external vehicle inspections and perform other duties assigned by management.

Experience and qualifications

• At least 5 years of relevant automotive workshop, fleet maintenance, or commercial vehicle maintenance experience.
• Previous supervisory or senior workshop experience is required.
• A diploma or bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Automotive Technology, or a related field is specified.
• An ITI or recognized automotive/mechanical maintenance qualification may be considered with substantial relevant experience.

Required knowledge and skills

• Strong knowledge of vehicle mechanical systems, preventive maintenance, and repair procedures; good understanding of diagnostics and troubleshooting.
• Experience supervising workshop technicians and maintaining fleet records and job cards.
• Ability to plan and prioritize repair jobs; knowledge of workshop tools, equipment, spare parts, and maintenance procedures.
• Leadership, organizational, problem-solving, communication, and interpersonal skills; ability to meet deadlines under pressure.
• Strong commitment to workplace safety and quality.
