Tunnel Design Engineer

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Prepare geotechnical data, interpretation, and design reports for tunnel and shaft construction.
• Design temporary excavation support; produce tunnel lining documentation, pressure calculations, and durability design.
• Analyze settlement and construction impacts on tunnels, shafts, foundations, utilities, and other infrastructure.
• Plan investigations and settlement monitoring; oversee monitoring implementation.
• Design and oversee dewatering and groundwater control, including settlement assessment for nearby buildings and utilities.
• Review as-builts and geotechnical data for due diligence; coordinate with authorities and utilities.
• Recommend construction means and methods; perform construction observation and inspection.
• Support brick operations with geotechnical recommendations and testing oversight.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Geology, Engineering Geology, or a related discipline.
• 1–10 years of underground construction experience, including tunneling or mining.
• Based in the UAE or GCC region, or eligible to work in the UAE.
• Must be comfortable working periodically inside tunnels.

Preferred skills and experience

• Preferred coursework includes geotechnical engineering, soils and rock mechanics, structural analysis, foundations, hydrology, earthquake engineering, tunnel engineering, and design/modeling subjects.
• Preferred experience includes geotechnical investigation and design, slope stability, excavation support, and analysis of impacts to adjacent buildings and utilities.
• Dubai/Gulf ground conditions, soft-ground EPB or slurry TBM design, and long-term uplift or buoyancy design are preferred.
• UAE Society of Engineers registration or eligibility and major Gulf infrastructure experience are a plus.

Workplace and schedule

• On site and in person in Dubai, UAE.
• The position may require extended hours and weekend work; periodic work inside tunnels is required.
