The Manager Trainee learns the duties and skills required for a Store Manager role, including customer experience, team development, sales, inventory, profit management, expense control, and shrink reduction.
Store leadership and service
- Recruit, hire, develop, evaluate, discipline, and retain efficient team members.
- Deliver customer service by greeting customers, uncovering needs, recommending products, and offering added value.
- Foster a welcoming and inclusive store for team members, customers, suppliers, and the community.
- Schedule and organize daily team activities and guide staff toward a strong customer experience.
- Communicate company processes and policies, assess their effectiveness, and coordinate improvements with district or regional managers.
- Resolve customer and team-member problems and conflicts; develop an engaging work environment.
Sales, inventory, and operations
- Learn sales and profit management and work toward financial targets.
- Maintain merchandise flow, in-stock levels, inventory controls, price changes, merchandise resets, and presentation standards.
- Process invoices, schedules, product orders and returns, and purchase-order reports.
- Train in sales forecasting, payroll analysis, budget review, team documentation, and corrective-action records.
- Coordinate with buyers, supply chain, district managers, and distribution centers to address inventory needs and issues.
- Learn to coordinate sales events, support district operational needs, and participate in community involvement.
- Train in budgeting, sales forecasting, and auditing store processes.
Qualifications
- Retail experience and/or farming, ranching, pet/equine, or welding knowledge is strongly preferred; supervisory experience is preferred.
- High school diploma; a bachelor’s degree in agricultural science or a business-related field is preferred. Suitable combinations of education and experience are considered.
- A valid driver’s license is needed if driving for company business.
- Ability to use store systems and POS registers, complete documentation accurately, access store areas, and operate necessary store equipment.
Work setting
- The role involves working in a retail store, including the sales floor, side lot, stock area, and register area.
