Role overview

Relay is a digital banking platform serving small businesses and their owners.

The Senior Software Engineer works across the product suite, solves complex problems, ships robust code, and helps shape systems and technical decisions.

What you'll do

  • Own feature work from design and development through testing, deployment, and monitoring, with attention to reliability and performance at scale.
  • Manage production systems and optimize infrastructure for platform availability, scalability, and resilience.
  • Collaborate with Product, Design, and other teams to meet customer and business needs.
  • Drive technical, process, and product improvements; influence technical direction and long-term strategy.
  • Mentor junior engineers and lead improvements to code quality, performance, and development processes.

Candidate requirements

  • At least three years of full-stack software engineering experience.
  • Have led significant components or features through successful delivery with minimal oversight.
  • Mentor junior engineers and proactively drive improvements to code quality, performance, and development processes.
  • Be curious and collaborative, comfortable with ambiguity and change, and take end-to-end ownership with customer and business impact in mind.
  • Startup or high-growth technology experience, JavaScript experience, and working knowledge of AWS services and continuous deployment pipelines are bonuses, not requirements.
  • The team primarily uses TypeScript, React, and Node.js.

Technology stack

  • Front end: React, TypeScript, and React Native.
  • Back end and infrastructure: Node.js, TypeScript, Terraform, and AWS services including DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, SES, ElasticSearch, and ECS.
  • Tools include Cursor, Claude, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Datadog, Jira, and Metabase.

Compensation

  • Annual salary range is CAD 144,000–176,000; the typical starting salary for candidates ready for the full role scope is CAD 160,000.
  • Starting offers may vary with readiness for the defined scope, demonstrated impact, or expanded responsibilities.

Interview process

The process includes a Talent video call, a live coding exercise, an Engineering Manager video call, a take-home system design challenge and review, and an in-person Leadership interview.
