Role overview

Relay is hiring Senior Software Engineer IIs to help set technical direction and shape architecture across interconnected systems.

The role focuses on high-risk, ambiguous work, cross-team influence, and developing technical leaders.

What you will do

  • Lead architecture and high-risk work across interconnected systems, setting standards for quality, reliability, security, and maintainability.
  • Own ambiguous cross-team initiatives from defining the problem through measurable outcomes; set priorities and resolve dependencies.
  • Connect technical decisions to customer needs, business priorities, cost, and risk, and identify important problems proactively.
  • Align teams with different priorities using context, evidence, and sound judgment rather than formal authority.
  • Create practices, tooling, documentation, and guardrails to improve delivery and operational effectiveness across Engineering.
  • Coach engineers and delegate ownership to help develop technical leaders.

Candidate profile

  • Have led architecture for complex, interconnected systems and owned high-risk technical decisions.
  • Have driven cross-team initiatives from ambiguous problems to measurable results.
  • Can connect technical trade-offs to customer impact, business priorities, cost, and risk.
  • Can influence teams and stakeholders without formal authority and improve delivery beyond their own team.
  • Can coach engineers, delegate meaningful ownership, and navigate ambiguity and change.

Bonus experience and technology

  • Startup or high-growth technology company experience is a bonus.
  • JavaScript experience is a bonus; the team primarily uses TypeScript, React, and Node.js.
  • Working knowledge of AWS services and continuous deployment pipelines is a bonus.
  • Experience in fintech, banking, or other regulated environments is a bonus.
  • The stack also includes React Native, Terraform, DynamoDB, RDS Postgres, Lambda, S3, SQS, SNS, SES, ElasticSearch, ECS, Cursor, Claude, GitHub, GitHub Actions, Datadog, Jira, and Metabase.

Compensation

  • The annual salary range is CAD $175,500 to $214,500.
  • The typical starting salary for candidates fully ready for the role's scope is CAD $195,000; offers may vary based on readiness, impact, or expanded scope.

Interview process

The interview process includes a Talent team video call, live coding exercise, Engineering Leaders video call, take-home system design challenge and review, and an in-person Leadership interview.
