Senior Software Engineer

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Contribute to technical design by analysing application requirements with senior technical engineers.
• Translate solutions for small- to medium-sized initiatives into low-level designs and working code.
• Write secure, optimised code to approved coding standards.
• Take part in rotational on-call support and resolve production issues within SLAs.
• Ensure built-in quality and unit testing in the CI/CD pipeline; analyse and fix defects.
• Use refactoring to minimise code debt and implement logging and monitoring hooks.
• Keep current with relevant technologies and apply learnings to improve code quality.
• Follow IT coding standards and contribute to engineering playbooks and standards documents.

Qualifications and experience

• Degree or honours (12+3 or equivalent) in a relevant field, such as computer science, computational mathematics, computer engineering, or software engineering.
• At least 3 years of backend application development experience, primarily in Java 8+ with microservices capability.
• Experience building complex software solutions for large organisations using API-first methodology.
• Experience with production support using ITIL, monitoring, self-healing, and observability tools.
• Deep full-stack development experience, technical evaluation, vendor selection, and vendor management.
• Experience with lean software, test-driven development, CI/CD, DevOps, and code management and testing platforms.
• Experience developing code using advanced agentic AI practices.

Technology and skills

• Backend: Java 8+, Spring, Spring Boot, RESTful APIs, SOAP, microservices, design patterns, API-first approaches, and caching such as Redis or Couchbase.
• Web: React.js, Next.js, or Node.js.
• Databases: Oracle, MariaDB, SQL Server, Postgres, Couchbase, MongoDB, Elasticsearch, and GraphQL.
• Cloud: AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud.
