Lead performance engineering for a suite of products in an agile release train, supporting availability, scalability, reliability, and built-in quality.

Collaborate with stakeholders to create performance engineering and testing strategies that account for products and cross-program dependencies.

Promote earlier, faster testing to help teams improve quality and time to market.

Key responsibilities

  • Design complex test scenarios, establish performance baselines, and identify regressions, anomalies, and improvement areas.
  • Participate in all phases of the performance engineering lifecycle.
  • Review solution architecture and recommend improvements to performance and reliability.
  • Maintain NFR backlogs with architects and product owners and ensure features and epics define NFRs.
  • Develop and regularly update workload models with IT and business stakeholders.
  • Investigate and resolve performance and availability issues to reduce production defect leakage.
  • Set performance gates in CI/CD pipelines and implement performance testing frameworks.
  • Enable development and testing teams to use performance frameworks; provide improvement feedback to the Senior Principal Performance Engineer.
  • Analyze test results statistically across data sources.

Required qualifications

  • 8+ years of hands-on performance engineering, including performance testing, profiling, and tuning for highly available, scalable, mission-critical applications.
  • 3+ years leading performance engineering practices for suites including web, mobile, and desktop applications.
  • Proven performance optimization and bottleneck analysis; proficiency with application profiling tools such as YourKit and JProfiler.
  • Experience with commercial or open-source load testing and client-side analysis tools, including examples such as LoadRunner, Gatling, JMeter, Sitespeed.io, WebPageTest, and Lighthouse.
  • Strong architecture review skills and advanced knowledge of software architecture concepts, trends, and practices.
  • Proficiency in APM, infrastructure monitoring, OpenTelemetry, logging, and tracing.
  • Ability to create realistic data-driven workload models from logs, APM, system metrics, and user behavior, deriving concurrency, transaction mix, and traffic distribution.
  • Experience with cloud, on-premises, or hybrid environments; expertise in Kubernetes, containerization, and orchestration.
  • Knowledge of relational and NoSQL databases and ability to diagnose and resolve database performance issues.
  • Familiarity with DevOps and performance gates in CI/CD pipelines.

Preferred skills

  • Preferred: familiarity with resiliency testing and chaos engineering.
  • Preferred: experience with capacity planning and resource forecasting.
  • Preferred: knowledge of service virtualization and mocking tools.
  • Preferred: exposure to Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools such as Terraform, Ansible, or AWS CloudFormation.
  • Preferred: familiarity with Operational Acceptance Testing, observability, and infrastructure and environment readiness.
