About EDGE

EDGE is a UAE-based advanced technology group working across defence and emerging technologies, with more than 35 specialised companies and multiple centres of excellence.

EDGE is headquartered in the UAE and describes Abu Dhabi as a hub for its multicultural community.

About the role

The Senior Power Electronics Hardware Design Engineer (Grade 7) designs, develops, integrates, and qualifies high-power electronics for motor drives, motor generator units, starter/generator systems, alternators, and electrically driven propulsion and control applications.

The role covers the hardware lifecycle from architecture and component selection through schematic design, simulation, PCB layout, thermal analysis, prototype bring-up, integration, and environmental qualification.

Work includes inverter, rectifier, bridge, gate-drive, protection, sensing, isolation, magnetics, DC-link, and EMI-filter circuits for PMSM, BLDC, and brushed DC machines.

The role requires hands-on high-voltage and high-current power electronics experience, including semiconductor selection, loss calculations, thermal derating, cooling design, and protection against abnormal conditions.

Responsibilities

  • Develop motor drive and motor generator unit power electronics architectures; design inverter, rectifier, and bridge stages for PMSM, BLDC, and brushed DC machines.
  • Design gate-driver, protection, isolation, starter/generator, alternator conversion, rectification, and regulation circuits.
  • Select MOSFET, IGBT, SiC, and GaN devices; calculate switching/conduction losses and perform derating analysis.
  • Design magnetics, current sensing, DC-link and EMI filters, sensing, isolation, and feedback circuits.
  • Perform thermal design, heatsink sizing, cooling analysis, schematic design, and high-voltage/high-current PCB layout.
  • Simulate and verify designs; address EMC/EMI and environmental qualification requirements.
  • Plan and support power-stage bring-up, integration, and qualification tests with system, software, electrical machine, test, and certification teams.

Basic qualifications

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Electrical/Electronics Engineering or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of hands-on power electronics and motor drive hardware design experience.
  • Knowledge of buck, boost, flyback, half/full bridge, and three-phase inverter topologies; alternators, generators, starters, PMSM, BLDC, and BDC motors.
  • Experience in gate-driver design, dead-time management, short-circuit/overcurrent protection, semiconductor selection, loss calculation, and thermal derating.
  • Experience with magnetics design, high-current PCB layout, schematic design, and PCB layout tools such as Altium Designer or Mentor PADS.
  • Experience with power electronics simulation tools such as LTspice, PLECS, PSIM, or Simulink, and with EMC/EMI-aware switching power-stage design.
  • Familiarity with MIL-STD-461, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-704, and RTCA/DO-160; knowledge of RTCA/DO-254 and requirements traceability.
  • English proficiency is required for all roles unless otherwise stated.

Preferred qualifications

  • ECU or MGU power electronics hardware development experience and electrical machine design/analysis tools such as Motor-CAD, JMAG, Ansys Maxwell, or Altair Flux.
  • Familiarity with sensorless control, resolver/encoder interfaces, field-oriented control hardware needs, and aerospace/defense development and certification practices.

Working at EDGE

  • EDGE describes learning opportunities through its learning academy and digital learning platforms, career support, and collaboration with international colleagues.
  • Compensation is described as competitive and tax-free; benefits may include family visas, annual flight tickets, medical insurance, and education allowances, depending on role and seniority.

Candidate information

  • EDGE encourages applications from candidates who may not meet every listed requirement and states that candidate information is handled under applicable privacy regulations.
