Senior Mainframe Developer - Hybrid

Role overview

Responsibilities

• Analyze business requirements and prepare technical design specifications.
• Design, develop, test, and maintain Mainframe applications using COBOL, DB2, JCL, and VSAM.
• Develop batch and online programs; maintain JCLs, PROCs, and batch schedules.
• Write complex DB2 SQL, optimize performance, and conduct impact analysis, code reviews, and testing.
• Support production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes.
• Use TSO/ISPF, SDSF, File-AID, SPUFI, and other tools for development and debugging.
• Collaborate across the SDLC, prepare technical documentation, and participate in Agile and release activities.
• Mentor junior developers and share knowledge.

Required qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related discipline.
• 8+ years of hands-on Mainframe development experience and strong COBOL programming expertise.
• Extensive DB2 database design, SQL coding, and performance-tuning experience.
• Strong knowledge of JCL, VSAM, and Mainframe batch processing.
• Hands-on TSO/ISPF and Mainframe utilities experience; working knowledge of SAS.
• Strong analytical, problem-solving, and debugging skills; excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Preferred qualifications

• Experience with Endevor, File-AID, Abend-AID, Expeditor, Control-M, and ChangeMan.
• Exposure to Mainframe modernization; domain experience in banking, financial services, insurance, or retail.
• Knowledge of Agile/Scrum and experience in application support, incident management, or release management.

Compensation

• Annual salary range is CA$60,000 to CA$117,000, depending on experience and qualifications.
• The position is eligible for a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to plan terms.

Work model

• Hybrid position requiring three days per week in a Toronto client or Cognizant office.
• In-person interviews may be required at Cognizant offices or client locations depending on project or client needs.
