Protection & Control Design Engineer
Role Overview
Serve as design authority for a low- to medium-complexity engineering discipline and complete small projects or portions of larger projects to contract, quality, and safety requirements.
Prepare protection principles, single-line diagrams, schematics, substation layouts, bills of material, RFQs, vendor offer reviews, engineering-hour estimates, risk assessments, and opportunity evaluations.
Coordinate with engineering leads, tendering, project management, supply chain, secondary and civil/steel design teams, consultants, and customers.

Coordinate with engineering leads, tendering, project management, supply chain, secondary and civil/steel design teams, consultants, and customers.
Design and project responsibilities
- Prepare base design documents, protection and control schematics, cubicle drawings, interface drawings, manufacturing documents, IED configurations, cable schedules, and test procedures.
- Review and validate documents against checklists and ISO standards; prepare project budgets, delegation plans, execution reports, and as-built/as-delivered documentation.
- Own assigned project scope, troubleshoot problems, identify root causes, propose solutions, and share lessons and mitigation plans.
Background and qualifications
- 8–10 years of electrical engineering industry experience, including work with power plants and grid substations from 11 kV to 400 kV.
- Experience with listed protection IEDs and testing kits, including Omicron CMC 256/356 and Megger.
- Knowledge of cubicles, mounting standards, electrical components, AIS/GIS substation equipment, relay settings, and substation SCADA networks and protocols.
- Use PCM, Digsi, Agile, or equivalent configuration software and be proficient with CAD design tools such as E-Plan, El-Master, E3, or equivalent.
- Excellent spoken English, communication and presentation skills; creative, proactive, and knowledgeable about Lean principles.
