Role overview

Lead the geotechnical workstream at the intersection of applied geotechnical engineering, analytical instrumentation, and product development.

Deliver product scoping, prioritization, and definitions of done to support product development and commercial rollout.

Translate high-resolution core imaging and multisensor systems into repeatable commercial products for structural and defect logging, rock strength, weathering and alteration, and rock-mass classification.

Product development and strategy

  • Establish and prioritize product requirements with clients and internal teams, covering sensor and imaging quality, structural picking, orientation pipelines, classification workflows, validation, and cadence.
  • Own and evolve the geotechnical product canvas and roadmap, balancing near-term delivery with long-term competitive differentiation.
  • Coordinate projects and priorities across the workstream; assess competitors, emerging trends, capability gaps, and resourcing needs.
  • Prototype workflows for fracture and defect detection, RQD, fracture frequency, discontinuity orientation and roughness, and strength proxies.
  • Guide prediction-model development with data scientists and software developers, assessing geotechnical plausibility, validation, and product readiness.
  • Recruit and mentor team members, provide structured feedback, and support their growth.

Clients, projects, and validation

  • Communicate the value of automated structural, strength, and rock-mass data for stability design, mine planning, ground-support optimization, and risk management.
  • Support technical product discussions and reviews with client geotechnical engineers and engineering geologists.
  • Build relationships with academic institutions and third parties working in automated characterization and rock mechanics.
  • Scope geotechnical logging, rock-mass classification, and strength-prediction workflows; review client data and generated outputs for engineering sense and analytical integrity.
  • Collaborate with geology, geometallurgy, and RMS product teams on geological, resource, and geotechnical domain models.
  • Design or oversee validation studies from individual defect and discontinuity picks to drill-hole-scale domains and laboratory strength testing.
  • Perform or supervise calibration and prediction models using core imaging and fused scanning data; ensure suitable inputs, interpretable behavior, and explicit uncertainty.

Required qualifications

  • Degree in geological engineering, geotechnical engineering, engineering geology, rock mechanics, or a closely related field.
  • Experience converting R&D work into commercial products and leading technical teams through ambiguous R&D-to-product translation.
  • Project management, collaboration, prioritization, team-development, and mentoring skills.
  • Track record of leading projects and teams in decisions under uncertainty, balancing validation, delivery, simplification, and product integrity.
  • Strong working knowledge of geotechnical core logging and rock-mass characterization, including RQD, fracture frequency, discontinuity orientation, roughness and infill, weathering and alteration, and RMR, Q, and GSI.
  • Experience comparing automated intact-core imaging and sensor measurements with manual records and laboratory measurements, including calibration and validation implications.
  • Familiarity with UCS, point-load, Brazilian tensile, and triaxial tests and their limitations as validation data.
  • Technical coding literacy to review notebooks and engage with modeling choices; existing networks in geotechnical, rock mechanics, or mining engineering.

Assets

  • Professional registration such as P.Eng., P.Geo., or equivalent is an asset.
  • Mining experience with a major producer or consulting company is an asset.
  • Technical coding and model-building capabilities are an asset.

Travel

  • Travel is required up to 20% of the time for client meetings and site visits.
