Role Overview

WSP is seeking a Principal / Associate Electrical professional with airport project experience.

The role leads electrical design and delivery for aviation and industrial buildings including hangars, workshops, and flight catering facilities.

The position acts as the electrical technical authority across power distribution, ELV systems, airfield interfaces, and hazardous-area design.

Core Responsibilities

  • Lead electrical design from feasibility and Basis of Design through detailed design, tender, and construction support.
  • Own power strategies covering MV/LV distribution, redundancy, load management, earthing, and control philosophies.
  • Design hazardous-area electrical systems for paint, fuel-cell maintenance, welding, and related operations.
  • Specify transformers, generators, UPS systems, distribution boards, and backup systems.
  • Integrate GPU, PCA, process equipment, mechanical, fire/life safety, and control system interfaces.
  • Deliver resilient electrical systems for catering facilities, cold-chain systems, and hygienic areas.

Coordination and Delivery

  • Lead BIM coordination across architecture, structures, MEP, and specialist systems using model QA and clash resolution.
  • Perform load estimation, cable sizing, protection coordination, short-circuit analysis, and lighting design.
  • Author Basis of Design documents, load schedules, single-line diagrams, specifications, and commissioning plans.
  • Mentor engineers and designers and lead design reviews, HAZOPs, and constructability or operability workshops.
  • Engage airlines, MROs, airport operators, and authorities to secure approvals and support delivery.
  • Lead retrofit, refurbishment, and brownfield upgrades in operational airport environments.

Systems and Domains

  • Airport systems include hangar power, ground power units, PCA interfaces, high-bay lighting, emergency power, earthing, bonding, and hangar door electrics.
  • Hazardous-area systems include explosion-proof equipment, interlocks, LEL monitoring interfaces, and ATEX or IECEx compliance.
  • ELV and controls include fire alarm, ICT, CCTV, access control, structured cabling, and BMS or SCADA integration.
  • Catering systems include resilient power for kitchens, cold rooms, freezers, food processing areas, and hygienic zones.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering.
  • Professional registration such as CEng, PE, or an equivalent qualification.
  • At least 15 years of experience in electrical building services design, including aviation and complex infrastructure projects.
  • Experience leading multidisciplinary design teams and delivering major projects.
  • Strong knowledge of international electrical design codes, standards, and aviation requirements.
  • Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering is preferred.
  • Experience in airport facilities, terminal buildings, and aviation-related infrastructure is highly desirable.
