The position:

The Planning Manager will be responsible for leading project planning and controls across multiple high-profile developments, ensuring programmes are aligned with client objectives, commercial targets, and delivery strategies.

Acting as a key client-facing representative, you will work closely with senior stakeholders, project teams, and leadership to drive planning excellence, manage project performance, and provide strategic guidance throughout the project lifecycle.

This role requires a commercially minded planning professional who can influence decision-making, communicate effectively with clients and leadership teams, and contribute beyond traditional scheduling functions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead the development, review, and management of project programmes across multiple projects, ensuring alignment with project objectives and delivery requirements.
  • Provide strategic planning advice to clients, project directors, and senior management, supporting informed decision-making throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Oversee programme performance, identifying risks, delays, and opportunities, while implementing effective mitigation and recovery strategies.
  • Manage and review contractor and consultant programmes, ensuring accuracy, compliance, and alignment with project milestones.
  • Present programme updates, critical path analysis, and performance reports to clients and senior stakeholders clearly and concisely.
  • Work closely with commercial, design, and delivery teams to ensure programme considerations are integrated into wider project and business objectives.
  • Lead planning workshops, progress reviews, and stakeholder meetings to drive accountability and project performance.
  • Develop and maintain programme governance, planning standards, and best practices across the project portfolio.
  • Support business growth initiatives by contributing planning expertise during project pursuits, bids, and client engagements.
  • Mentor and develop planning team members, promoting high standards of planning and project controls across the organisation.

Requirements

  • 15+ years of experience
  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related discipline.
  • Previous experience working for a Tier 1 consultancy or contractor, with consultancy experience preferred.
  • Proven track record managing planning functions across multiple complex projects and stakeholder groups.
  • Strong client-facing experience with the ability to confidently present programme strategies, project performance, and recommendations to senior stakeholders.
  • Commercially aware with a strong understanding of project delivery, risk management, and business performance.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify project risks and develop practical solutions.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and stakeholder management skills.
  • Experience leading and mentoring planning teams while driving planning best practice and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Build project background is essential; infrastructure experience alone will not be considered.
