About the role

The Internal Controls Manager supports the Group Head of Internal Controls in managing the framework covering the organisation's global operations, financial reporting and legal and policy compliance.

The role covers group controls. Base location is flexible.

What you'll do

  • Maintain and refine the internal control framework as the organisation and risk profile change, working with control owners to mature the control environment.
  • Maintain procedures and standards aligned with best practices and operational, financial reporting and compliance objectives.
  • Oversee first-line self-assessments and second-line testing for Provision 29 compliance and assurance to the Audit and Risk Committee.
  • Report on control effectiveness, significant risk exposures, test results and remediation plans.
  • Identify and document deficiencies, ensure remediation, and escalate material weaknesses promptly.
  • Deliver training and awareness initiatives to promote a control-conscious culture.
  • Coordinate with process owners, Risk Management, Compliance and Internal Audit to align governance, risk and controls, reduce duplication and resolve audit findings.

Experience and knowledge

  • Experience in internal controls, external audit or internal audit is required.
  • Knowledge of internal control frameworks and regulations, particularly Provision 29 of the UK Corporate Governance Code.
  • Familiarity with COSO is noted; Optro experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience with Provision 29, Sarbanes–Oxley or equivalent standards and cross-functional projects is valuable.
  • Engineering and construction industry experience is preferred but not essential.

Skills

  • Proficiency in Excel, strong organisation, multitasking and prioritisation are required.
  • The role calls for stakeholder relationship-building, communication, influence, analytical thinking, attention to detail, ethics and professional scepticism.
