Design Lead (Primary) - Substation (Electrical)

Role overview

Key responsibilities

• Review and execute primary engineering activities and substation layout design; facilitate BIM 3D model development.
• Coordinate interdisciplinary checks across electrical, civil/structural, MEP, mechanical, and instrumentation teams.
• Review drawings, equipment design and sizing calculations, vendor deliverables, and engineering-office outputs; obtain client approvals.
• Coordinate with local adaptation consultants on translation and compliance with local standards.
• Coordinate with the Uzbekistan-based contractor on construction issues and with ACWA and NEGU teams on drawing approvals.
• Deliver engineering drawings and documents on schedule and check construction suitability of equipment, cable routing, cable tray, earthing, lighting, and lightning protection layouts.
• Obtain project inputs from clients, the Project Engineering Manager, vendors, and the Design Lead (Secondary), including spatial requirements, openings, plot details, feeder arrangements, and general arrangement drawings.
• Evaluate vendors against client technical specifications, send validation documents to Supply Chain Management, and inspect equipment from selected vendors.
• Provide site execution and secondary-team support, including design clarifications and vendor drawing reviews.
• Coordinate with operations and submit man-hour requirements for design and drawing work.

Qualifications and experience

• B.E./B.Tech. in Electrical Engineering or Electrical and Electronics Engineering.
• At least 10 years of experience, predominantly in primary design engineering activities.
• Detailed knowledge of substation equipment and layouts, single-line diagrams, earthing, cable routing, lighting, lightning protection, and cable tray routing.
• Ability to perform design and sizing calculations for busbars, UPS, DG, LT transformers, earthing conductors, short-circuit forces, sag tension, and CCC.
• Knowledge of national and international codes and standards and ability to interpret contractual technical requirements.
• Understanding of interdisciplinary civil/structural, mechanical, and instrumentation design aspects of electrical equipment.
• General awareness of Dialux and MS Office; awareness of BIM, Digsilent, PSCAD, and CYMGRD is desirable.

Work location and project context

• The posting is located in Sharjah, UAE and includes coordination with a remote engineering office in India, a contractor in Uzbekistan, and project site teams.
