Prepare and cook food to recipes, quality and presentation standards, and food preparation checklists.
Preparation and cooking
- Portion, chop, wash, and peel ingredients; weigh, measure, and mix ingredients.
- Prepare and cook food, including cold foods, and operate ovens, stoves, grills, microwaves, and fryers.
- Test food for doneness and monitor its quality during preparation.
- Serve proper portions in appropriate receptacles and set up and break down the work station.
Kitchen hygiene and safety
- Wash and disinfect kitchen areas, tables, tools, knives, and equipment.
- Check that appliances and food are at correct temperatures.
- Follow safety and security policies, complete safety training, and report maintenance needs, accidents, injuries, and unsafe conditions.
Qualifications and skills
- A minimum of 1–3 years in a similar role in a hotel, restaurant, or catering environment.
- Knowledge of food preparation techniques, kitchen operations, and food safety standards.
- Ability to follow recipes, standard operating procedures, and chef instructions accurately.
- Knowledge of proper food storage and FIFO stock rotation.
- Attention to detail, commitment to food quality and presentation, and ability to work efficiently under pressure.
- Positive attitude, attention to detail, and willingness to learn.
- Flexibility to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.
Work conditions
- The role may require standing or walking for an extended period or an entire shift.
- The work includes reaching, bending, twisting, pulling, stooping, and handling objects up to 25 pounds without assistance.
