Telecom Commissioning Engineer – DWDM & IP/MPLS

Role overview

Key responsibilities

• Install, configure, test, and commission DWDM/OTN equipment, including transponders, muxponders, amplifiers, mux/demux units, protection modules, and optical supervisory channels.
• Provision wavelengths, assign channels, balance optical power, and verify end-to-end optical paths.
• Validate transmit/receive power, span and insertion loss, OSNR, attenuation, and optical link margins.
• Test optical fiber using OTDR, optical power meter, light source, OSA, optical attenuator, and related equipment.
• Optimize links; isolate faults; conduct loopback, BER, protection switching, and redundancy tests; restore services.
• Install and mount equipment, patch fiber, complete cabling and grounding, connect DC power, label equipment, and verify site readiness.
• Perform service migration and cutover, configuration backup, rollback, and post-migration testing.
• Verify alarms, performance, equipment status, and network connectivity using the applicable NMS.
• Verify IP/MPLS Ethernet interfaces, VLANs, IP connectivity, routing, MPLS services, alarms, logs, and redundancy.
• Prepare test procedures, commissioning reports, migration records, configuration details, red-line drawings, and acceptance documents.
• Supervise technicians and subcontractors; ensure project quality and HSE compliance.
• Coordinate with OEM engineers for specialized technical activities when needed.

Qualifications and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Telecommunications, Electronics, or a related field.
• Relevant DWDM/OTN or optical network certification is preferred; Huawei, Nokia, Cisco, or equivalent certification is an advantage.
• A UAE driving licence is mandatory.
• At least five years of telecom installation, testing, commissioning, migration, or maintenance experience.
• Strong hands-on DWDM/OTN experience; Huawei OptiX OSN 1800/9800 or Nokia PSS 1830 experience is preferred.
• Practical experience with optical power balancing, wavelength provisioning, OSNR verification, protection switching, and optical troubleshooting.
• Hands-on experience with OTDR, OSA, optical power meter, light source, attenuator, Ethernet tester, and BER tester.
• Working knowledge of IP/MPLS routers, switches, Ethernet services, and network integration.
• Experience in FAT, SAT, service migration, system acceptance, technical reporting, and team supervision.
• Utility, power, oil and gas, railway, or other critical infrastructure experience is preferred.
• Candidates with experience limited to fiber installation, structured cabling, RF, or microwave systems will not be considered; active DWDM/OTN experience is required.
