Role overview

Technical strategy and architecture

• Own architecture for a significant part of the HCM charter across teams and services; identify constraints on velocity, reliability, or customer experience and drive their resolution.
• Author and shepherd technical strategy documents and architecture decision records that teams build against.
• Define integration contracts and service boundaries across HCM and adjacent Workforce Solutions platforms.
• Lead modernization and re-platforming strategy, including sequencing, migration paths, and risk management while keeping systems running.
• Make consequential tradeoff decisions with incomplete information and revisit them when evidence changes.

AI architecture and practice

• Own architecture for AI-powered and agentic HCM capabilities, including shared services, context and retrieval patterns, orchestration, and reuse.
• Establish evaluation and quality infrastructure for non-deterministic systems, including evaluations, regression suites, guardrails, fallback behavior, cost and latency budgets, and observability.
• Set boundaries for responsible AI in compliance-sensitive paths where errors may have legal and financial consequences for customers.
• Improve charter-wide AI engineering practices through patterns, tooling, forums, and consistent high-quality workflows.
• Track emerging capabilities and translate useful advances into architectural and workflow changes.

Leverage and influence

• Multiply engineering output across teams through design review, mentorship, and unblocking difficult problems.
• Mentor senior and staff-track engineers on technical judgment, scope, and influence.
• Raise standards for design reviews, test strategy, CI/CD, operational readiness, and code health.
• Build alignment across engineering, product, and design leadership without positional authority.
• Represent HCM technical direction in cross-organizational architecture reviews and to senior leaders.
• Contribute to hiring, leveling calibration, and technical assessment of senior and staff candidates.

Operational accountability

• Drive systemic improvements in reliability, latency, and security.

Requirements

• Ability to set technical direction across multiple engineering teams in the HCM charter.
• Experience making architectural decisions across React front ends and cloud-native backend services.
• Ability to reason about business logic, including calculation and eligibility rules, auditable compliance behavior, and integration contracts.
• Experience leading modernization decisions, including what to rebuild, replace incrementally, or leave in place, and sequencing the work while maintaining operations.
• Ability to define architecture for AI-powered and agentic product experiences, including shared patterns, evaluation infrastructure, guardrails, and appropriate system boundaries.
• Ability to improve AI engineering practice across an organization with coherent, high-quality, measurable ways of working.
• Ability to influence without positional authority, mentor senior engineers, and represent technical strategy to senior engineering and product leadership.
