Sr Virtual Designer (Sr Modeler)

Role overview

Project delivery and modeling

• Support project initiation, setup, estimates, model readiness, and kickoff; review client manuals, project standards, details, and specifications.
• Interpret structural drawings, specifications, addenda, reference models, RFIs, and other design information to apply design intent.
• Coordinate modeling tasks, schedules, planned hours, and milestones for project delivery.
• Model primary and secondary structural steel, complex connections, and miscellaneous items including embeds, stairs, handrails, and ladders.
• Identify missing information, discrepancies, conflicts, and constructability issues; raise RFIs for technical queries.
• Coordinate with project leads, managers, checkers, engineers, BIM/VDC teams, and other stakeholders to resolve technical issues.
• Incorporate approved revisions, RFIs, and client comments into models and deliverables, and track CORs.

Quality, coordination, and mentoring

• Monitor modeling progress, productivity, and delivery readiness; proactively communicate technical and schedule risks and potential impacts.
• Support review and release of deliverables under project quality processes and client requirements; focus on first-pass quality and minimizing rework.
• Maintain consistent model standards, numbering, templates, reports, and project-specific workflows; improve procedures, checklists, and templates.
• Support Tekla custom components, auto connections, templates, reports, and productivity tools.
• Provide day-to-day guidance to junior modelers and modelers; support technical training, onboarding, knowledge sharing, and team development.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and checkers to improve quality, productivity, consistency, and delivery efficiency.

Required qualifications

• Diploma or bachelor's degree in civil engineering, mechanical engineering, or a related discipline; equivalent relevant experience may be considered.
• 8+ years of structural steel detailing experience, including significant 3D steel modeling experience.
• Strong hands-on experience with Tekla Structures; U.S.-based structural steel project experience is preferred.
• Strong knowledge of structural steel detailing, fabrication, and erection practices.
• Good working knowledge of AISC standards and U.S. structural steel detailing practices.
• Experience collaborating with engineers, fabricators, project managers, checkers, and multidisciplinary project teams.
• Demonstrated ability to provide technical guidance or mentor junior and intermediate modelers.

Technical skills

• Advanced proficiency in Tekla Structures and structural steel 3D modeling and detailing.
• Knowledge of complex steel connections, constructability, and miscellaneous steel modeling and detailing.
• Understanding of AISC, OSHA, and relevant U.S. detailing practices.
• Working knowledge of Tekla Power-Fab and Trimble Connect; proficiency in Bluebeam or similar review and markup tools.
• Understanding of BIM/VDC coordination and multidisciplinary workflows.

Preferred skills

• Experience with U.S. structural steel projects and Tekla automation, custom components, templates, reports, and workflow optimization.
• Knowledge of Revit, Navisworks, or other BIM/VDC platforms.
• Strong attention to detail, technical quality, communication, collaboration, prioritization, and continuous improvement.
