Role overview

Wise is hiring a Backend Software Engineer for its Treasury Ledger team.

The team builds a real-time, accurate ledger of Wise’s foreign-exchange position and liquidity.

The work supports Treasury and the evolution of high-volume, event-driven infrastructure.

What you will work on

  • Build specialized ledgers that track foreign-exchange risk and liquidity in real time.
  • Design real-time reconciliation and data-quality controls that catch discrepancies as they happen.
  • Bring new Wise products into the ledger to give Treasury a complete picture of money movements across products and currencies.
  • Scale real-time event processing for speed, resilience, and observability.

Technical responsibilities

  • Own features end to end, from product events to the real-time ledger streams Treasury relies on.
  • Help shape new ledger architecture through design discussions and code reviews.
  • Address distributed-systems challenges including exactly-once processing, event ordering, replay, and real-time aggregation.
  • Build with Java 25, Spring Boot, Apache Kafka, Apache Flink, MariaDB, and ClickHouse.
  • Use AI tooling during development while maintaining quality.
  • Participate in incident resolution, post-incident learning, and on-call support when needed.

Technical qualifications

  • Professional experience building backend software and solid software engineering fundamentals.
  • Experience with Java or a similar object-oriented programming language.
  • Good understanding of databases and SQL.
  • Write well-tested, maintainable code and care about data correctness and edge cases.
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and domains.

Ownership and collaboration

  • Take ownership from design through production and understand the purpose and problem behind work.
  • Communicate clearly with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders; share knowledge and participate in open feedback.
  • Contribute to engineering communities or guilds across Wise.

Nice to have

  • Experience with Kafka, Flink, or other stream-processing technologies is a plus.
  • Experience with analytical databases such as ClickHouse is a plus.
  • Experience with event-driven or data-intensive systems is a plus.
  • Interest or experience in payments, banking, accounting, or another financial domain is a plus.

Compensation

  • Starting salary is £68,000–£87,500 per year, plus RSUs.

Candidate eligibility

  • The employer is currently considering local candidates only and does not provide relocation support; visa sponsorship transfer may be supported for local candidates.
