Role overview

Amazon's CloudTune Scaling Planner team develops capacity automation products for thousands of EC2-based Auto Scaling Groups across the Stores, Devices, and Other organization.

Proactive Scaling uses business forecasts and capacity calculations to recommend capacity ahead of demand; Reactive Scaling responds to unplanned demand changes and breached real-time thresholds.

The Software Development Engineer II owns design, delivery, and operation across the portfolio, primarily focusing on Proactive Scaling, in partnership with scientists, capacity managers, and service owners.

Key responsibilities

  • Own design, implementation, and operation of Proactive Scaling services that generate capacity recommendations from forecasts, scaling formulas, and the Capacity Calculator.
  • Build and improve automation for calculating, scheduling, and applying capacity overrides for peak events and daily scaling across IAD, PDX, DUB, FRA, and ZAZ.
  • Contribute to Reactive Scaling systems that monitor CPU and throughput metrics through CloudWatch and PMET and adjust capacity when thresholds are breached.
  • Integrate Scaling Planner with the Capacity Calculator, formerly CloudSpin, Fleet Management Console, and CloudTune Capacity Service.
  • Define and monitor risk factors, efficiency metrics, and guardrails, and work with customers to address automation gaps.
  • Lead technical design reviews, author design documents, and influence Scaling Planner architecture.
  • Mentor junior engineers and maintain on-call, monitoring, alarming, and incident response standards for owned services.

Basic qualifications

  • At least 3 years of non-internship professional software development experience.
  • Programming experience in at least one modern language such as Java, C++, or C#, including object-oriented design.
  • Experience building complex software systems successfully delivered to customers.

Preferred qualifications

  • Experience with the full software development life cycle, including coding standards, code reviews, source control, builds, testing, and operations.
  • Experience designing or architecting systems, including design patterns, reliability, and scaling.
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science or equivalent.

About the team

Scaling Planner provides capacity automation for Amazon's SDO organization and works with CloudTune Science, capacity management, and service owners.

The team values ownership, operational excellence, and automation that reduces manual work for Amazon engineers.
