Role overview

The Merchant and Partner Lifecycle team is consolidating merchant lifecycle orchestration into a cohesive domain to address architectural risks.

The engineer will act as a technical leader building a new lifecycle-orchestrator service connecting multiple systems.

The work will improve availability through simplification and isolation and modernize older codebase components.

What you'll do

  • Design and expand platform infrastructure to scale to hundreds of thousands of merchants worldwide.
  • Align work with other teams to deliver cross-team projects.
  • Mentor engineers to support their growth.
  • Partner with the engineering manager and team lead on the team's long-term vision.
  • Execute technical strategy for broad, complex, and open-ended requirements.
  • Use agentic development tools such as Claude Code to automate parts of the development process.
  • Improve engineering standards, tooling, and processes across the organization.

What we look for

  • 5+ years of backend software engineering experience.
  • Strong understanding of Domain-Driven Design, distributed systems, and architectural effects on performance and maintainability.
  • Proficiency with data models, HTTP and RPC API design, state machines, event-driven architecture, and database design.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication, including asynchronous technical specifications, ADRs, and project plans.
  • Experience designing, developing, and launching backend systems using AWS, gRPC, Snowflake, Kotlin, Python, MySQL, and Kubernetes.
  • Java and Kotlin experience are especially helpful.
  • Experience with monitoring and alerting systems such as Sentry, Rollbar, Chronosphere, or Kibana.

Remote-first workplace

  • Affirm is a remote-first company, and most roles can be performed from almost anywhere within the country of employment.
  • Some positions may occasionally require in-person office work, and all new hires are invited to an in-person onboarding experience.

Compensation

  • Canadian base pay range is 153,000 to 213,000 per year.
  • Compensation may include equity rewards, monthly health, wellness, and technology stipends, and benefits.

Benefits

  • Benefits include fully subsidized medical coverage, dental and vision coverage for employees and dependents.
  • Additional benefits include spending stipends, flexible time off, holidays, and an employee stock purchase plan.
