About SteerAI

SteerAI is an autonomous mobility technology company powered by VentureOne, the commercialization arm of the Advanced Technology Research Council.

Its AI-powered autonomy stack, developed by the Technology Innovation Institute, supports industrial vehicles in logistics and defense, including complex off-road missions.

About the role

Own hands-on mechanical design and development for vehicle components, subsystems, and platform solutions across the product lifecycle.

Coordinate external design partners and lead defined work packages and smaller projects.

Work with systems, electrical, software, manufacturing, procurement, test, and quality teams to deliver safe, robust, manufacturable, and maintainable vehicle solutions.

Key responsibilities

  • Own vehicle component, assembly, and subsystem design from concept through release and improvement; translate requirements into designs, interfaces, models, drawings, bills of materials, and manufacturing specifications.
  • Perform calculations, tolerance analysis, GD&T, material selection, and design analysis; apply requirements management, design reviews, DFMEA, verification planning, configuration control, and manufacturing release processes.
  • Lead smaller projects and work packages, defining scope, deliverables, schedules, resources, dependencies, priorities, and risks.
  • Scope and monitor external engineering work, review deliverables, resolve issues, and ensure integration with vehicle architecture and the controlled product baseline.
  • Support concept evaluation, prototyping, vehicle integration, verification, testing, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis.
  • Collaborate across functions; support suppliers, manufacturing, assembly, and quality; apply DFM/DFA and address production or field issues.
  • Maintain engineering documentation, communicate progress and technical decisions, and support less-experienced engineers and process improvement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related field; 7+ years of relevant mechanical design and product-development experience.
  • Substantial experience with vehicle, automotive, off-highway, or special-purpose vehicle applications.
  • Hands-on 3D CAD and detailed drawing skills using SolidWorks, Creo, CATIA, or comparable tools; PDM/PLM experience is expected.
  • Practical knowledge of product development from requirements and concept selection through release, verification, industrialization, and change management.
  • Experience coordinating external engineering companies, design houses, or technical suppliers and reviewing their work.
  • Ability to lead smaller projects, technical workstreams, or multidisciplinary work packages to scope, quality, and schedule.
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical design, GD&T, tolerance analysis, DFM/DFA, DFMEA, materials, fabrication methods, and engineering calculations.
  • Experience with prototyping, mechanical testing, durability, vehicle integration, and systematic problem-solving.
  • Professional working proficiency in English and ability to produce clear technical specifications, reviews, and reports.
  • Additional relevant experience may include low-volume, off-road, unmanned ground, or defense vehicles; automotive and mechanical standards; FEA and validation; or mentoring and technical leadership.

What we offer

  • Competitive salary and comprehensive benefits package.
  • Opportunity to work in autonomous robotics in a collaborative, inclusive culture focused on innovation and personal growth.
