Senior Estimation Engineer (Civil)

Position and employment

Education and experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Engineering, Engineering Technology, or an equivalent combination of studies and experience.
• At least 10 years of experience estimating heavy civil projects.
• Previous experience in a managerial role in an estimating department.
• Job-site experience is an asset.

Estimating knowledge and tools

• Demonstrated intermediate-to-advanced understanding of core estimating processes, requiring minimal direction and supervision.
• Advanced knowledge of EPC estimating methods, processes, procedures, estimate types, classifications, components, detail-level estimates, and design packages.
• Experience with Lump Sum Design & Build and/or OOM estimates.
• Significant knowledge and experience in quantity take-offs, statistical analysis, cost and price analysis, and life cycle cost analysis.
• Skilled in interpreting technical discipline processes, engineering drawings, quantity determinations, and mathematical and financial reports.
• Understanding of craft productivity, current market pricing in related areas, and construction practices in the local work region.
• Advanced knowledge of construction methods and techniques in the area of specialization; general understanding of other disciplines; familiarity with engineering and construction codes and standards.
• Thorough understanding of cost indexing and escalation projection sources; understands and contributes to risk and contingency assessments.
• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications; expert in discipline estimating applications and knowledgeable about commercial estimating systems such as Candy.

Preferred experience

• EPC estimating methods/process experience of 8 years is preferred.
• Quantity take-offs and price analysis experience of 8 years is preferred.
• Experience with an estimating application such as Candy for 10 years is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Develop and assess estimates for heavy civil projects using appropriate estimating methods and procedures.
• Prepare and evaluate estimate types, classifications, components, detail-level estimates, and design packages.
• Perform quantity take-offs, statistical analysis, cost and price analysis, and life cycle cost analysis.
• Interpret engineering drawings, technical discipline processes, quantity determinations, and mathematical and financial reports for estimating work.
• Assess craft productivity, market pricing, and construction practices in the local work region.
• Apply construction methods, techniques, and relevant engineering and construction codes and standards.
• Use cost indexing and escalation projections in estimates.
• Contribute to risk and contingency assessments.
