Senior Backend & Platform Engineer

Role overview

Backend and API engineering

• Build and maintain high-performance Python and FastAPI applications, REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven services.
• Develop asynchronous applications, background workers, scheduled tasks, and processing pipelines.
• Build integrations with third-party APIs, payment gateways, IoT systems, and external services.
• Implement authentication, authorization, data validation, and secure API communication.
• Write tests, review code, troubleshoot issues, optimize performance, and contribute to architecture decisions.

Databases and distributed systems

• Design PostgreSQL schemas, relationships, and indexes; write and optimize SQL queries and database access patterns.
• Handle connection pooling, migrations, transactions, data consistency, and diagnosis of slow queries.
• Use Redis or similar caching to improve application performance.
• Build distributed services and messaging-based asynchronous communication; implement retries, timeouts, idempotency, and fault tolerance.
• Design services for high concurrency, large transaction volumes, real-time processing, IoT devices, and external platforms.

Cloud operations and reliability

• Deploy and operate backend applications on AWS and containerize them with Docker.
• Configure AWS services, application environments, secrets, deployments, and CI/CD pipelines.
• Manage reverse proxies and application routing using Nginx, Traefik, or equivalent tools.
• Troubleshoot deployment failures, runtime issues, and problems across application, database, and infrastructure layers.
• Monitor application health and implement structured logs, metrics, tracing, and alerting.
• Resolve production incidents and improve performance, availability, resilience, and operational documentation.

Ownership and collaboration

• Own backend services from development through production deployment and operation.
• Collaborate with mobile, product, and engineering teams and participate in design discussions and architectural reviews.
• Review code, mentor engineers, improve development practices, identify technical debt, and enhance existing systems.

Essential qualifications

• 5+ years of professional software engineering experience with substantial hands-on backend development experience.
• Strong Python skills, including asynchronous programming, concurrency, and performance optimization; production experience with FastAPI or a comparable Python framework.
• Strong REST API, service-oriented architecture, and backend application design knowledge.
• Strong PostgreSQL experience, including schema design, indexes, query optimization, and transactions; experience with Redis or equivalent caching.
• Experience with external integrations, distributed systems, messaging patterns, background processing, Git, automated testing, debugging, and code quality.
• Practical AWS application deployment and operations experience, Docker, CI/CD, Linux, networking fundamentals, and production troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with application logging, monitoring, and alerting; candidates must be strong backend developers first.

Additional advantages

• Experience with NATS, RabbitMQ, or Kafka; TimescaleDB or other time-series databases; IoT platforms, TCP sockets, or real-time device connectivity.
• Payment processing, Kubernetes, EKS, container orchestration, Terraform, or Infrastructure as Code experience.
• Prometheus, Grafana, CloudWatch, OpenTelemetry, performance profiling, Go, Rust, mobility, fleet management, or connected vehicle platform experience.
