Role and research project

Join the Ocean Dynamics group at the University of Cambridge's Department of Applied Mathematics and Theoretical Physics.

The project is part of a wider Frontier Climate programme studying ocean alkalinity enhancement.

The Cambridge team will model the near-field environment around a 2025 field trial conducted by the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

The post is available from 15 November 2026 or another mutually agreed start date.

Research duties

  • Build a high-resolution model of the field-trial near-field environment.
  • Investigate potential alkalinity loss through secondary mineral precipitation and use simulations to assess sampling strategies.
  • Plan and manage independent research, work closely with collaborators, and communicate technical material clearly.
  • The role may include student project supervision, instruction, research-skills development, and related seminars.

Methods and tools

  • Simulations will use Oceananigans.jl to represent physical processes at the field site.
  • OceanBioME.jl will model interactions between dissolving and sinking particles and seawater carbon chemistry.
  • Ocean modelling experience, particularly with Oceananigans, is highly desirable; seawater carbon chemistry knowledge is desirable but not essential.

Qualifications

  • Have or expect to soon be awarded a PhD in Oceanography, Physics, or a related field.
  • Experience in ocean modelling.
  • Ability to communicate technical material clearly and build internal and external collaborations.

Contract duration

  • The post is fixed term, with funding available for 24 months in the first instance.

Application details

  • Closing date: 19 October 2026. Applicants should provide two academic referees, a full CV, a publication list, and a recent research description of no more than two pages.
