Research project
Khalifa University seeks a Postdoctoral Fellow for a funded project investigating the geological, glacial, and periglacial history of polar regions as analogs for Mars.
The work focuses on data from the Schirmacher Oasis, including a recent field trip and monitoring stations planned for early 2027 with India’s National Center for Polar and Ocean Research.
The researcher will have access to university analytical facilities and collaborate with researchers and graduate students from diverse scientific backgrounds.
Responsibilities
- Conduct independent research with limited supervision and contribute to conference papers and peer-reviewed journal manuscripts.
- Analyze samples for comparison with Mars remote-sensing data and rover or lander in-situ measurements.
- Analyze upcoming Antarctic monitoring-station data to investigate landscapes analogous to Mars during earlier climatic conditions.
- Present research findings at international conferences, subject to funding availability.
- Comply with university information-security and confidentiality procedures and report breaches or security risks.
Essential criteria
- PhD in Geology, Earth Sciences, or a related discipline from a reputable university; the PhD must be from a top-200 QS- or THE-ranked university.
- High expertise in periglacial landscapes and experience writing scientific or review papers.
- Previous analog fieldwork experience and familiarity with Mars-focused planetary science research.
- Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
- High-impact first-author publications in the top 10% of journals in the relevant field.
- Willingness to contribute to a collaborative and supportive team culture.
