Job purpose
The Portfolio Manager sits within IT&D and supports a critical operational network and related transformation activity.
The role connects complex activities, constraints, dependencies, and priorities to improve portfolio visibility, governance, delivery, and decision-making.
This hands-on position balances portfolio management with reactive problem-solving.
Key accountabilities
- Establish visibility of portfolio activity, priorities, risks, constraints, dependencies, and delivery.
- Develop portfolio plans, priorities, decision points, governance, responsibilities, accountabilities, and decision rights.
- Coordinate reporting, RAID, and portfolio controls with PMO and relevant teams.
- Identify issues and dependencies, escalate or resolve them, and support transformation and T3 activity where required.
- Build alignment across IT&D, operational, delivery, and supporting teams; communicate clearly with operational and senior audiences.
- Embed practical portfolio processes, transfer ownership and capability, and avoid ongoing dependency on the role.
Essential experience and skills
- Experience managing complex portfolios, programmes, or delivery environments.
- Experience establishing portfolio governance and ways of working.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, influencing, and communication skills.
- Able to shift between portfolio oversight and detailed operational issues and balance proactive planning with reactive problem-solving.
Desirable experience
- Utilities or other complex operational environment experience is desirable.
- Operational technology, critical infrastructure, regulated environments, or major infrastructure programme experience is desirable.
- Familiarity with portfolio or programme frameworks, or experience working with a PMO, is desirable.
