Phlebotomists collect patient blood specimens using venipuncture and microcollection techniques.
Clinical collection and laboratory support
- Identify patients using two identifiers and verify patient information against the requisition before venipuncture.
- Perform venipunctures and skin punctures competently and efficiently.
- Know the appropriate collection tubes, blood volumes, and test requirements; assist in the clinical laboratory as needed.
- Perform bleeding time tests, blood cultures, and blood sample collection.
- Maintain blood collection room requirements, cleanliness, and order.
- Stock laboratory supplies and keep trays and tools clean and sanitized.
- Perform filing, assist technologists, and collect data.
- Handle complications related to blood draws, patient allergies, or other patient conditions.
Qualifications and requirements
- Valid DOH license or pass result as a Phlebotomist or Laboratory Technician.
- Diploma in Laboratory Technology or Phlebotomy from a recognized university or institution.
- At least two years of experience as a Phlebotomist in a medical laboratory.
- Valid home-country license as a Phlebotomist or Laboratory Technician.
- Fluent spoken and written English; Arabic is desirable but not essential.
- Valid BLS certification from AHA.
Safety and compliance
- Follow occupational safety and infection control policies, standards, and procedures.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment and safety systems; comply with waste management procedures.
- Report hazards, incidents, and near misses, and assist with risk assessments and incident reports.
- Follow emergency and evacuation procedures and attend applicable training, mock drills, and awareness programs.
