Position overview

A hands-on Lead Python Engineer / Technical Architect will be the senior technical member of a small engineering team.

The role combines Python development, AWS architecture, technical leadership, and direct business-stakeholder collaboration.

The position is not purely architectural or managerial; active involvement in design, coding, code review, and delivery is expected.

This is a hybrid position requiring onsite presence at the client’s London office two days per week.

Client and initiative

The client is a global investment management organization modernizing business-critical investment analytics and portfolio-management applications.

The initiative is greenfield-focused and offers influence over solution architecture, technology choices, and engineering practices.

Scope includes portfolio management and investment analytics, fixed-income ETFs and capital-markets solutions, integrations with external platforms such as BNY and Aladdin, and modernization of business-developed applications.

Responsibilities

  • Lead solution architecture and technical design; design, develop, and maintain production-grade Python applications.
  • Refactor and modernize applications originally developed by business teams.
  • Design scalable, resilient, secure, and observable AWS-native solutions.
  • Contribute to data architecture and solutions based on Snowflake and modern data platforms.
  • Define engineering standards, design patterns, testing practices, and CI/CD processes.
  • Conduct code reviews and support software quality, maintainability, and security.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders and subject matter experts to translate business needs into technical solutions.
  • Work effectively with limited Business Analyst support.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level engineers and facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Stay actively involved in solution design, coding, reviews, and delivery.

Requirements

  • Strong hands-on Python development experience and proven experience designing and building production-grade applications.
  • Strong AWS architecture and cloud engineering expertise.
  • Previous experience as a Technical Lead, Lead Engineer, or hands-on Architect.
  • Experience modernizing or refactoring legacy or business-developed applications.
  • Knowledge of software architecture and design patterns, API design, and system integration.
  • Knowledge of automated testing, quality engineering, CI/CD, and version control.
  • Knowledge of application security, monitoring, and observability.
  • Experience with Snowflake or comparable modern data platforms and data-intensive applications or analytics solutions.
  • Strong stakeholder communication and requirements analysis skills.
  • Experience mentoring and supporting junior and mid-level engineers.
  • Able and willing to work onsite at the London office two days per week.

Preferred experience

  • Financial-services experience, particularly in asset management, investment management, or capital markets, is nice to have.
  • Experience with portfolio management, investment analytics, fixed income, or ETF solutions is nice to have.
  • Exposure to Aladdin, BNY, comparable financial platforms, or integrations is nice to have.
  • Experience modernizing applications developed by business analyst or quantitative teams is nice to have.
  • Familiarity with AI-enabled software development, agentic workflows, or AI-assisted SDLC is nice to have.
