Location and work arrangement

  • The role is based in London and is hybrid, with two days a week in the office.

Role summary

Design, develop, and support scalable enterprise applications using Java and Spring technologies.

The role includes new feature development, work with Business Analysts and business stakeholders, production support, and ongoing improvements to application stability, performance, and monitoring.

Day-to-day duties

  • Design, develop, test, and implement functionality using Java and Spring/Spring Boot; develop backend services, APIs, and reusable components.
  • Work with stakeholders and Business Analysts to understand requirements and translate them into scalable, maintainable solutions.
  • Design REST API integrations and optimise database queries and data-access components.
  • Investigate production incidents, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes for recurring issues.
  • Improve stability, performance, monitoring, and observability; participate in solution design, technical discussions, and code reviews.
  • Develop unit and integration tests and ensure appropriate coverage.
  • Support releases, deployments, and production readiness; collaborate with QA, DevOps, infrastructure, and support teams.
  • Follow Agile/Scrum and software engineering best practices.

Basic qualifications

  • 7+ years of Java application development and enterprise software engineering experience.
  • 4+ years of Spring/Spring Boot and backend application development experience.
  • 3+ years developing and integrating REST APIs and relational databases.
  • 3+ years across the full SDLC, including design, development, testing, deployment, and production support.

Core technical skills

  • Java; Spring and Spring Boot; REST APIs and system integration; SQL and relational databases.
  • Object-oriented design, design patterns, and software design principles; unit and integration testing.
  • Incident analysis, root-cause analysis, troubleshooting, Git, CI/CD, monitoring, logging, and observability.

Nice to have

Kotlin; Linux/Unix; Kubernetes; microservices and distributed application architecture; Docker and cloud-native development.

Monitoring tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana; CI/CD tools such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, GitHub Actions, or Azure DevOps.

Business-critical production application support; performance, resilience, and stability engineering; analytical, troubleshooting, communication, and problem-solving skills.
