Programme overview
The Intelligence and Data Analyst Development Programme is a 5.5-year structured pathway to become a fully trained Intelligence and Data Analyst.
Analysts turn complex, incomplete information into insight that informs investigative decisions and helps protect the UK.
The programme includes structured training, guided practice, and varied postings, with dedicated support from managers, development partners, and the programme cohort.
Analytical work
- Work with varied data and tools to identify patterns, connect apparently unrelated activity, and help investigative teams understand threats, risks, and opportunities.
- In the first analytical posting, refine investigative requirements, work with complex datasets, and produce intelligence products supporting investigations.
- Present findings clearly and collaborate with MI5 colleagues, partner agencies, and UK allies.
- Later postings may involve investigation-focused analysis delivery or non-delivery work such as training and tradecraft development.
- Develop coding and querying expertise, adapt to changing tools and threats, share knowledge, support peers, and refine analytical methods.
Development pathway
- The usual pathway includes three postings, though some may be extended so the programme is completed in two longer placements.
- The first stage is four months of intensive full-time training; annual leave cannot be taken during this period.
- The second stage is a two-year analytical posting.
- The final stage comprises one or two further postings lasting up to three years in total; postings are assigned according to business need.
Role expectations
- The programme develops analytical tradecraft, sound judgement, technical capability, and collaboration in a fast-moving investigative environment.
- Candidates must be prepared and able to work at either Central or West London.
Work locations
- Initial training is office-based.
- Postings may be based in Central or West London, and candidates must be able to work at either location.
