HPC Computational Scientist

Position summary

Research and user support

• Installs, ports, tunes, and optimizes HPC applications, libraries, tools, and data analysis software for CPU and GPU architectures.
• Provides user support through telephone, walk-in, email, and ticketing submissions.
• Works with faculty, researchers, collaboration partners, and industrial partners to support research objectives.
• Develops software tools, applications, and parallel libraries for research on cluster systems and subsystems.
• Develops benchmarks for laboratory system upgrades and supports benchmarking for future procurements.

Training, documentation, and research

• Develops, delivers, updates, and supports user training, instruction, and user and internal documentation.
• Reviews and prepares documentation for systems, tests, and software installations.
• Maintains technical currency through collaboration, training, conferences, practice, and independent learning.
• Pursues aligned research, co-authorship where appropriate, scientific communication, and outreach.

Education and experience

• Requires a Ph.D. in computer science, computational science and engineering, or a closely related discipline.
• Requires at least five years using and supporting large-scale computing platforms and related subsystems.
• Requires relevant experience in computational science and engineering or a closely related discipline, plus experience in parallel computing and storage systems.
• Requires research experience in at least one area: HPC performance modeling or tuning; I/O, data management, or compression; emerging or heterogeneous architectures and memory systems; node-level programming; or distributed programming models.
• Computing at scale, such as on a Top500 system, is desired.

Technical competencies

• Requires programming proficiency for HPC applications and tools; examples include Fortran, C/C++, Python, MPI, OpenMP, CUDA, and OpenACC.
• Relevant expertise includes computational science and engineering, data analysis, and AI applications and libraries in HPC environments.
• Requires the ability to support research in HPC and work collaboratively; publications in relevant journals and conferences are specified.
