Senior Data Engineer role delivering Royal Mail's data strategy and scalable data products across a large, complex organisation.
Works with Data Analytics, Data Science, Machine Learning Engineering, and Technology teams.
Location and arrangement
- Based at Royal Mail Farringdon, London, three days per week.
Salary and benefits
- Competitive salary; salary cadence and amount are not specified.

Responsibilities
- Lead design and delivery of data pipelines and products, and optimise and monitor the cloud data platform, particularly Google Cloud Platform.
- Establish data ingestion, processing, storage, and analysis approaches; lead sourcing and transformation of operational and strategic data.
- Own data-product lifecycles, including delivery, incident management, BAU support, documentation, and handover.
- Partner with data science and machine learning teams to productionise AI and machine learning use cases.
- Automate CI/CD, testing, infrastructure, releases, and configuration; oversee priorities, resource allocation, and estimates.
- Collaborate with product, delivery, and business stakeholders; support pilots and innovation.
- Coach engineers, promote engineering standards, and reduce technical debt.
Requirements
- Significant data engineering experience delivering production-ready solutions with measurable business value.
- Strong experience in Python or Scala; hands-on Spark and Kafka or similar big data and streaming technologies.
- Experience with data models, ETL/ELT, data warehouses and lakes, SQL, databases, metadata management, and data governance.
- Cloud-platform experience with Google Cloud tools or comparable Azure or AWS services; distributed cloud application experience is sought.
- Experience with CI/CD, Kubernetes, release management, automated testing, and cloud deployments.
- Knowledge of TDD or BDD, MLOps, and Agile delivery tools such as Jira and Confluence.
- Strong communication, stakeholder management, analytical problem-solving, and engineer coaching or mentoring experience.
- A relevant degree or recognised cloud engineering certification, ideally Google Cloud, is valuable.
