Role overview

Commercial Manager role at Associate Director level within the Technical Operations Group.

Pan-practice leadership role focused on commercial governance, project risk visibility, project viability, and client relationships.

The role covers live projects from bid and fee proposal through technical delivery, change management, and close-out.

About the company

Stride Treglown is an employee-owned architectural and multidisciplinary design practice and certified B Corp.

The practice has more than 300 specialists across architecture, interiors, landscape architecture, urban design, town planning, graphic design, and social research.

Key responsibilities

  • Review bids, fee proposals, scopes, exclusions, and consultant appointments.
  • Advise on JCT and NEC contracts, novation, procurement, liability, collateral warranties, and professional indemnity.
  • Identify risks, recommend mitigations, revise terms, and advise on additional fees or specialist input.
  • Partner with Project Leaders on risk identification, change control, fee recovery, and project health.
  • Support dispute avoidance, claims management, and early resolution of commercial issues.
  • Lead sub-consultancy arrangements and develop commercial reporting for leadership.
  • Provide commercial guidance, coaching, and training to project teams.
  • Balance commercial risk with design quality and technical assurance.

Requirements

  • Substantial commercial management experience in construction, engineering consultancy, development, or contractor-side delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of appointment documents, JCT and NEC contracts, novation, indemnities, liability caps, and professional indemnity insurance.
  • Experience supporting complex multidisciplinary projects from inception through completion.
  • Strong judgement, negotiation, analytical, written communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills.
  • Experience with contract review, scope definition, fee proposals, change management, contractor-led procurement, and consultant appointments.
  • Ability to present commercial data and trends to project teams and senior leadership.
  • Willingness and ability to travel across UK studios.

Compensation

  • Salary is £85,000 to £95,000 per annum, based on 37.5 hours per week and pro rata for part-time work.

Working hours

  • The role is offered on a full-time or part-time basis, with three or four working days mentioned in the source.

Work locations

  • The role can be based in Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, London, or Manchester studios, with travel across UK locations.
