Role overview

Stride Treglown is seeking an experienced commercial professional to join its employee-owned multidisciplinary design practice.

The Commercial Manager role is at Associate Director level and sits within the Technical Operations Group.

The role strengthens commercial governance, supports Project Leaders, improves risk visibility and protects project viability across live projects.

The position can be based in Bristol, Bath, Birmingham, London or Manchester studios, with travel across UK locations.

About the company

Stride Treglown is a 100% employee-owned architectural and multidisciplinary design practice and a certified B Corp.

The practice has more than 300 specialists across architecture, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design, town planning, graphic design and social research.

Key responsibilities

  • Review bids, fee proposals, scopes, exclusions and consultant appointments for commercial robustness.
  • Advise on JCT and NEC contracts, novation, contractor-led procurement, liability positions, collateral warranties and professional indemnity.
  • Recommend mitigations, revised terms and additional fees on high-risk projects, escalating specialist matters when needed.
  • Identify scope creep, rework, fee erosion, programme extension and resource pressure on live projects.
  • Support structured change control, additional fee recovery, dispute avoidance and claims management.
  • Lead consistent application of sub-consultancy arrangements across the practice.
  • Develop commercial reporting for leadership and the Project Assurance Committee.
  • Deliver guidance, coaching and training to project teams and future leaders.
  • Balance commercial risk with design quality and technical assurance.

Candidate requirements

  • Substantial commercial management experience in construction, engineering consultancy, development or contractor-side delivery.
  • Strong knowledge of appointment documents, JCT and NEC contracts, novation, indemnities, liability caps and professional indemnity insurance.
  • Experience supporting complex multidisciplinary projects from inception through completion.
  • Sound commercial judgement and the ability to balance risk management with practical delivery and client relationships.
  • Excellent negotiation, analytical and written communication skills.
  • Experience with contract review, scope definition, fee proposals, change management, contractor-led procurement and consultant appointments.
  • Understanding of risk escalation and commercial governance frameworks.
  • Ability to present commercial data clearly and travel across UK studios.

Compensation and benefits

  • Salary is £85,000 to £95,000 per annum, based on 37.5 hours per week and pro rata for part-time work.

Working hours

  • The source states that the role may be full-time or part-time for three or four days per week.
