Barista responsibilities
- Prepare coffee, tea, cold, specialty, and other menu items to approved recipes; calibrate grinders and maintain extraction and milk-texturing quality.
- Operate, clean, and maintain café equipment safely; perform routine checks and report faults.
- Serve customers, recommend products, take accurate orders, process payments, and handle feedback or special requests professionally.
- Maintain product consistency, cleanliness, hygiene, food safety, allergen control, and workplace safety.
- Monitor supplies, receive and rotate stock using FIFO, report inventory issues, and support waste reduction.
- Assist with opening and closing, peak workflow, promotions, menu launches, events, records, and operational procedures.
Senior Barista duties
- Lead bar operations and coordinate workflow during assigned shifts.
- Coach junior baristas on preparation, equipment, service, hygiene, and standards; assist with onboarding and skills development.
- Monitor beverage quality and recipes; support stock checks, ordering, opening and closing, and operational reports.
- Support the café supervisor or manager with customer concerns, equipment problems, and service disruptions.
Requirements
- Previous experience as a barista, senior barista, coffee specialist, café crew member, or similar food and beverage role.
- Strong espresso, brewing, grinder calibration, milk steaming, equipment, customer service, communication, teamwork, and busy-service capabilities.
- Knowledge of food safety, hygiene, sanitation, allergens, workplace safety, inventory control, FIFO, and waste management.
- Senior Barista candidates should demonstrate leadership, coaching, training, and shift coordination; prior supervision or training is preferred.
- Professional, reliable, punctual, customer-focused, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities.
- Willingness to work shifts, weekends, public holidays, and extended hours during peaks or events.
Advantageous skills and qualifications
- Coffee origins, roasting, extraction, flavour profiles, and specialty coffee knowledge are advantageous.
- SCA certification or equivalent specialty coffee training is advantageous.
- Additional language skills are advantageous.
